Marissa Jacobsen - Registered Clinical Counsellor/Clinical Director

Marissa works out of our Nanaimo location

Marissa is a Registered Clinical Counsellor who received her Master's of Arts in Counselling Psychology from the Adlerian School of Professional Psychology.  She has worked in a variety of settings in British Columbia such as residential and non-residential mental health and dual diagnosis treatment settings. Although she is currently working in the Nanaimo region located on Vancouver Island. She has done outreach in the community to multiple barriered individuals and short term stabilization crisis counselling through an employee assistance program.    

Marissa offers short- or long-term counseling to adults and couples, who are experiencing a variety of concerns, including depression, anxiety, self-esteem issues, relationship difficulties, conflict, communication problems, grief and loss, mood disorders, suicide, and transitional difficulties. Additionally she is specialized to work with individuals with developmental disabilities and their unique presenting concerns and challenges.

Marissa incorporates a broad range of therapy orientations into her practice including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Behavioural Therapy. She provides a safe and supportive environment in which clients can explore their issues and difficulties.

Colleen Spooner - Registered Clinical Counsellor/Clinical Director

Colleen works out of our Mission location

Colleen Spooner is a Registered Clinical Counsellor with a Master’s of Arts in Counselling Psychology and a Bachelor’s of Arts in Human and Social Development and Child and Youth Care.  She is also a Certified Child Life Specialist.  To obtain this designation she wrote a certification exam in San Diego and completed an extended undergraduate practicum in a children's hospital, working with children in the oncology and haematology department promoting effective coping through play, preparation, education, and self-expression activities.  She also promoted emotional support for families and encouraged optimum development of children facing challenging experiences in the healthcare system.  Colleen has experience in a variety of settings such as residential and non-residential settings for the treatment of both mental health and addictions challenges, a youth correctional centre, hospitals, schools, daycares, in-home support, community inclusion programs, answering calls at a crisis line, and teaching special topics in addictions to second year counselling students.

Colleen works from a person and centred perspective.  She has experience and incorporates theoretical orientations such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectal Behavioural Therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, and Expressive therapies into her practice.  


Colleen specializes in working with adults facing a variety of life challenges including anxiety, depression, trauma, or general life challenges to promote optimal wellness.  She accepts clients funded by the Crime Victim Assistance Program.  Colleen also works with an Employee and Family Assistant Program to provide brief solution-focused counselling.  

Colleen is trained in EMDR.
